Math teachers agree that one of the most common difficulties in learning math is the "trouble memorizing and recalling basic facts." Students generally understand math concepts but can produce inaccurate results when their calculations are based on faulty recall of math facts. Since all learning is based on memory, it is easier to retain and recall things that have meaning than it is for things that do not...thus the need for association.   Association is the natural, as well as the easy way to assure instant recall. A basic technique for developing memory is to picture what you want to remember...to visualize. One of the easiest ways to visualize is through descriptive stories involving interesting characters. The Midget Digit program makes use of association and decriptive stories to give math facts a meaning that is easily assimilated by children.

How To Teach

Remember that there is no one right way to teach as there is no one right way to learn. Let the needs of your children/students determine the order in which you teach the stories.

Suggestions for Instruction:

teach
READ to Remember Math Facts to all types of learners, young and old. Read books uses colorful stories where consistent characterizations of numbers allow students to recognize and quickly recall fact families as well as basic facts.

teach
RACE to Remember Math Facts to learners who require or do well with drill and to learners who need to overcome test anxiety. Each race book is based primarily upon two facts to insure progress and success. Motivational quotes and various formats make for enjoyable drill work.

teach
DRAW to Remember Math Facts to the global learner who thrives with art and whole language, and to analytic learners who need to develop artistic skills. Draw books have short stories that allow the student to read and write about the characters. Drawing instructions and activities help the kinesthetic learner.

teach
TICKLE to Remember Math Facts to the very young learners; learners who require tactile reinforcement; and learners who do well with problems in larger print. Tickle books uses a Multi-Sensory Teaching approach for success in math. Problems with multiple addends are made easy when counting the tickle spots on each character.
